Creamy "One-Pot Orzo"

This dish combines tender chicken, creamy orzo and the savoury flavour of sun-dried tomatoes to create a wonderfully harmonious meal, all prepared in a single pan. The result is a rich pasta dish that’s perfect for both hectic weekdays and as a simple, comforting meal at the weekend. Thanks to its mild creaminess and the ease with which it can be adapted, it can be tailored to suit a variety of tastes – even those of little foodies.

A bowl of orzo and sun-dried tomatoes

Zutaten:

Ingredients for 2 people

  • 325 g chicken or tofu
  • ½ tbsp oil
  • 1.5 garlic cloves
  • 85 g sun-dried tomatoes
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 125 g orzo
  • 325 ml hot chicken stock
  • 75 ml cooking cream
  • 25 g Parmesan
  • 60 g spinach

Zubereitung

Method

  1. Heat the oil. Once it is hot, add the chicken or tofu and fry for about 5 minutes until the chicken or tofu has browned slightly.
  2. Reduce the heat and add the garlic, dried tomatoes, oregano and paprika. Stir for 3–5 minutes until the garlic is soft.
  3. Stir in the orzo, stock and a little pepper, put the lid on and leave to simmer for about 10 minutes until the orzo is almost cooked.
  4. Reduce the heat to the lowest setting, stir in the cream and spinach. Leave to simmer for 3 minutes. Finally, fold in the Parmesan.

For a spicy twist, the dish can be enhanced with chilli flakes or harissa, and for a bit of crunch, simply sprinkle some toasted pine nuts on top.

How to make the dish appealing to fussy children

Many children prefer mild, distinct flavours and separate components. With a few small adjustments, this dish can therefore be served in a way that’s perfect for children:

  1. Arrange the ingredients separately: Place a little orzo without sauce, a few cubes of chicken, and some spinach or tomatoes separately on the plate.
  2. Less intense ingredients: Finely chop the sun-dried tomatoes or serve them on the side. Or replace them with a few fresh, milder tomatoes.
  3. Hide the spinach: Finely chop or purée the baby spinach and only then stir it in – that way, it’s hardly noticeable.
  4. Use milder seasoning: Reduce the amount of paprika and oregano in the children’s portion and allow them to season to taste at the table.
  5. Let them have a say: Let the children sprinkle Parmesan over the dish themselves or mix the ingredients – this makes them much more likely to enjoy it.

They’re particularly suitable for families because they don’t take long to prepare, are easy to adapt and cater to everyone’s tastes. This way, you can create a delicious, balanced meal for everyone with minimal effort.

For vegetarians or people who don’t like chicken, tofu is a wonderful alternative.
