During pregnancy, micronutrient requirements increase significantly, as the body has to provide both for the mother and for the development of the unborn child at the same time.
Important micronutrients during pregnancy include folic acid, iron, iodine, vitamin D3 and the omega-3 fatty acid DHA.
Yes, micronutrient requirements remain high even after birth, especially if the mother is breastfeeding. The body still needs additional nutrients to produce breast milk and recover from pregnancy and childbirth.
Ideally, you should start taking folic acid before you get pregnant. Because the embryo’s neural tube closes very early in pregnancy (often before the pregnancy has been noticed), an early supply is crucial.
Yes, diet has a direct impact on micronutrient requirements during pregnancy. Unbalanced or severely restricted diets can lead to certain vitamins and minerals being insufficiently absorbed.
Vitamin B12 and iron are especially important for women eating vegetarian or vegan diets during pregnancy. Vitamin B12 is found almost exclusively in animal-based foods. Although plant sources of iron contain iron, it is less easily absorbed by the body than iron from animal sources.
Micronutrients play a key role in trying to conceive, as they support fertility and the body's preparation for pregnancy. Micronutrients are particularly important in early pregnancy because fundamental developmental processes take place in this phase.
