Quality does not just happen in production

A Burgerstein product is not created overnight. It often takes between one and a half and two years from the initial scientific research, through the development of the recipe, to the product’s launch.

A high-quality end product starts long before the first container is filled. From scientific research and formula development to quality control, there are many steps on the journey of a Burgerstein product. Each and every one of them contributes to the end result of a product that you as a customer can hold in your hand.

It all starts with a good idea

Not every product idea automatically becomes a new Burgerstein product. It always starts with this question: how do we want to contribute to well-being? To this end, we take into account the latest scientific findings and the needs of our customers. The actual product development only begins once a convincing overall concept has been created.

The right formula is more than the sum of its ingredients

Which vitamins, minerals or plant extracts are combined? In what dosage? And in what form? Formula development is not just about selecting high-quality ingredients, but also about coordinating them with each other in an effective way.

The selection of the appropriate dosage form is equally important: should the product be formulated as a tablet, a capsule, powder or in another dosage form? In the process, we take into account various factors such as the target group, the simplest and most pleasant way possible to take the product, the stability of the ingredients, as well as taste and use.

From concept to first sample

Theory becomes practice. The next step involves producing the first test batches. These demonstrate whether the desired formulation and galenic form can be technically realised. It often takes several rounds of optimisation before the formulation and dosage form meet all requirements. You can find out more in the article “Not every nutrient is suitable for every galenic form”

For example:

A tablet must be hard enough to withstand coating, transport and storage without being damaged. Coating means that the tablet is covered with a thin protective layer. This can, for example, make it easier to swallow, mask an unpleasant taste or protect the active ingredients from external influences.

In the case of a powder mixture, however, it must be checked whether the components can be mixed evenly so that they do not separate. Does the powder taste pleasant? Are sensitive ingredients and combinations sufficiently protected and therefore stable throughout the entire shelf life?

Many details determine the quality

Before actual production starts, every detail is defined: the final formula and dosage form, the appropriate packaging and the volume of contents, all the way to the specialist information and training materials. This careful preparation lays the foundation for smooth production and a successful market launch.

Now the actual manufacturing begins

Only now does the developed formula become a finished product. During production, analyses and quality controls accompany each batch. The so-called bulk – i.e. the finished product before filling – is carefully inspected by us in-house. The bulk is only released by the Quality Control department once all the requirements of the product specification have been met.

How does a formula become a finished Burgerstein product?

Once the bulk goods have been approved by the Head of Quality Control, the products are filled, labelled and packaged in specially protected and controlled rooms. After further checks, the finished products are released by Quality Assurance and are finally ready to be sold.

Quality must be maintained until the final date

Even after completion and approval in Rapperswil, it often takes some time before a Burgerstein product is actually purchased by a customer. The product is stored and transported, reaching pharmacies and drugstores and finally consumers via our distribution partner ebi-pharm ag and wholesalers. The quality of the product must be reliably maintained throughout this entire service life.

To ensure that the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients they contain maintain their quality over the entire life of the product – from manufacturing to the end of the shelf life – we carefully check stability and shelf life. This means that we can ensure that the products still meet the stringent quality requirements even at the very end of their shelf life.

Even tried-and-tested products are constantly being further developed

However, even after market launch, the process of development is by no means over. New scientific findings are constantly being incorporated into the further development of existing formulas – because quality is not a one-off goal for us, but a continuous process.

Why each product needs its own formula

Not every ingredient is suitable for every dosage form. The optimal design of a formula is determined by stability, bioavailability and dosage. Discover why scientific and pharmaceutical decisions play a key role at Burgerstein.
