Pregnancy and breastfeeding: ensuring an adequate intake of vitamins, minerals and fatty acids

Pregnant woman with a baby bump – micronutrients, vitamins and minerals from Burgerstein to support you during pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Pregnancy is a time full of emotions for a woman and marks the start of a new chapter in her life. As a new life begins to take shape, so too does a period of many changes in her life – physical, emotional and hormonal. Her micronutrient requirements also change.

Why are micronutrients so important for pregnant and breastfeeding women?

Targeted supplementation during pregnancy and breastfeeding helps to meet the mother’s increased requirements and promotes a healthy pregnancy. An adequate intake of all essential micronutrients also supports the child’s optimal development.

Increased requirements for micronutrients during pregnancy and breastfeeding

During pregnancy, the requirement for various micronutrients increases by up to 50–100 per cent. For this reason, it is advisable to take dietary supplements containing the relevant nutrients during this period to promote the child’s healthy development.
These higher requirements continue even after the birth. In the first 4–6 months, the infant doubles its birth weight. It relies on a balanced supply of nutrients via breast milk.

Dietary supplements: best taken as soon as you start trying for a baby

During the first 3–4 weeks of life – that is, even before the expectant mother is aware of her pregnancy – important developmental processes take place in the embryo, such as the formation of tissues, organs and the nervous system. It is therefore crucial from the very beginning that the developing child receives an adequate supply of vitamins, minerals, trace elements, fatty acids and amino acids.

The expectant mother should therefore ensure, even before becoming pregnant, that she consumes sufficient nutrients to build up her body’s reserves. This will enable her body to be optimally prepared for the upcoming pregnancy.
